Partnership Programs
Camp Programs
For many years, HFL has been giving loans to young boys and girls to attend summer camp programs through Fresh Air Society and the Jewish Community Center Day Camp. These families receive some scholarship dollars but are still in need of financial help in order to provide a Jewish camp experience for their child.
Many of the children are from single parent homes. Their camp experience creates very strong bonds with other Jewish children. For some this will be their first sense of Jewish identity with other Jewish boys and girls. Many parents thank us for giving them a loan and the joy it gave their child.

Jewish Education Loan Service Program (JELS)
JELS is a group of philanthropic individuals and organizations who have pooled their funds to provide interest free loans to Jewish students who have borrowed through conventional means and still have unmet needs. The program is administered through JVS and Hebrew Free Loan.
The JELS program assists full-time students who are permanent residents of Michigan. These student loans are renewable on an annual basis. Loan payments are deferred as long as the student is attending school full-time with the exception of a yearly payment
of $50.
An appointment will be arranged at JVS, where you will discuss your plans and obtain assistance in learning about financial aid from school and government sources. If you meet the qualifications, a personalized confidential profile will be presented to the JELS Review Committee for loan approval.
Once the loan has been awarded, Hebrew Free Loan will process the loan application and promissory note. The student and one co-signer (a parent is allowed) are required to sign the promissory note.
For more information regarding the JELS program, contact Dr. Marvin Berman, the JELS coordinator, at mberman@jvsdet.org or (248) 233-4209. www.jvsdet.org
TOV Education Loans
Project TOV is a loan program for post-high school training or vocational education. The program helps students who require immediate assistance to meet tuition payment deadlines and do not meet the requirements for commercial loans. TOV loans are available to individuals who are part-time students seeking to upgrade their education or interested in studying in Israel or other foreign countries.
Repayment will begin thirty days after the loan is funded. All applications will be confidential. JVS staff will screen, evaluate and make recommendations regarding application and an educational plan. A narrative and recommendation will be sent to Hebrew Free Loan.
